QMW Holds Pioneer Module Handover Ceremony

2022-01-28

QMW, McDermott’s joint venture yard in Qingdao, China, is preparing for a significant increase in workload in 2022 and beyond. As a result, training and maintaining McDermott’s industry-leading safety standards and workmanship has never been more important. To address this need, QMW developed a mini-module to provide continued opportunities for training and guidance for new recruits.

The training module, named the Pioneer Module, was presented by Kenneth Gardiner, QMW Yard Operations Manager, to Geoffrey Gelsthorpe, the Yard Quality Manager, who leads the Craftsman Evaluation and Training Center (CETC), in a ceremony on January 19, 2022.

The Pioneer Module is 63 by 30.5 by 39 feet (19.3 by 9.3 by 11.9 meters) and weighs approximately 100 metric tons. In addition to training and evaluation of craft employees, it can also be used by newly recruited engineers, as it immediately provides access to module site conditions, where they can be familiarized with almost all discipline works involved during module construction.

Through the use of the module as a QHSE training facility, QMW can provide a safe working environment for multiple skills assessment, mock-ups, pre-inspection alignment, and demonstration of individual construction disciplines. With the advantage of providing real, onsite working conditions, it can transfer a craft persons’ learning experience from a classroom environment to a practical working environment.

“This pioneer module has demonstrated the commitment of the QMW team with Taking the Lead in QHSE. It is designed in-house and has incorporated many inputs from our first-line supervision, including some of the best industrial practices in training and development,” said Qiuzhe Li, General Manager of QMW. “I am really proud of the team in driving the right culture of delivering certainty with ZERO defect and ZERO hurt.”
